Purchased a Yelp Deal 2 check-ins Just brought my vw rabbit in for the free bday oil change. Work was done efficiently and in the amount of time promised, with a free car wash - that was a nice surpise! This time Rick told me the car needed a coolant flush, but didn't insist on doing it on the spot. I told him I will call to schedule over the summer, and I will! Thank you, Rick! I found this shop as a result of a grupon or amazonlocal deal -- $19 for an oil change and car wash. Great, I thought, that's less than the price of an oil change alone, and my VW Rabbit was just about due for one and way overdue for a good cleaning. Well, my wallet got good and clean, as it turns out. I made the appointment, no problem, brought my car in, and Rick gave me a lift home cause he said it would be a few hours. When I got a call from him later that day, I thought it was gonna be that the car was all ready. Instead I hear " when my mechanic was changing your oil, he noticed your brake pads were low, they need to be replaced, oh, and there's water in your brake fluid, that needs to be flushed out." Well I have no idea if this is true or not. My car has 37K miles on it and it's possible, I suppose. I hadn't noticed any problem with my brakes, but you never know. I was gonna bring it to the dealer for its 40K inspection in a few months and it's certainly a possibility they would have told me the same thing, and charged a heck of a lot more. So after a bit of hesitation (and price investigation) I said go ahead. Only problem was, I had plans for the evening and needed my car back. Rick said he thought he could have it done in time. Well he couldn't. He ended up picking me up and giving me an old Jetta to use overnight, which aside from the squeaky door and strange crayon-like smell, drove fine, in spite of the two warning lights on the dash which he told me to ignore. I put $10 worth of gas in the Jetta and came by the next day to pick up my car, which was a lot cleaner than it had been (but not perfect!) and my wallet was lighter too. Bottom line is, if I did get services performed that I actually needed, by my accounting I saved about $235 by having Rick do the work instead of the dealer, (which is about what he charged, so I guess that comes out to half as much). My Rabbit drives fine now and I am happy (but then again it drove fine before). Oh, and as a bonus Rick gave me a 2 week VIP pass to Equinox that I'll probably give to my son to use as I am a YogaWorks devotee!! All in all, a pretty good experience, but I was taken aback by what seemed to be a bit of "bait and switch". I think a better way to have handled it would have been to let me pick the car up and then have told me I will probably need a brake job in a few months, and to please come see him. I would have, but maybe others wouldn't have. It just left a little bit of a bad taste in my mouth 'cause I'll never know for sure, and that's why I gave only 3 stars. I think I probably will use him in the future, as I like to support small shops over "big box retailers" in all areas. And he is one heck of a nice guy :-)) Read more
